Thoughts on the Stag Party

Thoughts on the Stag PartyFor a very long time the stag party has been part of every man’s wedding. What “stag party” means seems to be as varied as the men who organize them. But no matter what type of stag you’ll plan as the best man or receive as the groom, there are some definite rules of etiquette that should be followed.

The first big question is who gets invited? One of the primary reasons to have a stag is not just to celebrate but to raise money for the groom to take on the honeymoon. With that said, the more attendants the better. But because stag activities can be, at best questionable, you may want to consider having two stag parties, one - family stag that is controlled and sanitized and one that is well, a normal stag for close friends.

The family stag could be held near the time of the wedding when the guests from out of town are in for the wedding. The friend stag should be held one to two weeks before the wedding to ensure the groom is fully recovered before the wedding.

At the family stag, run raffles, play cards and do anything you can think of that will help raise money for the groom. At the friend stag, you can take the groom out and exhaust him on his last night of being a bachelor.

At either stag, there are still some responsibilities that need to be attended to. First, someone needs to be responsible to make sure the groom gets home safe and sound. Whether it’s the best man or not, make sure someone steps up to the plate to be the groom’s designated driver. Second, appoint a designated censor. Let’s face it, even stags that begin with the most innocent of intentions can turn into a wild night. Make sure someone is on hand to confiscate photos and videos that shouldn’t be allowed to circulate. Some events are best when they exist only in thought and memory; a stag party is definitely one of those events.

Above all the stag is a chance for the groom to celebrate with his male friends and family. Whatever kind of stag you plan, just make sure that you don’t lose sight of the idea that the stag is all about fun. Bring fun to the stag or bring the stag to the fun, just make sure it’s all about the groom.
