Get "Carried Away" with Sex and the City By Heather Watt |
| |
For all those HBO-lovers who were grieved beyond words when Sex and the City ended in 2004, the film, just released on DVD last week, is a must-see. If the television show made you fall in love with the characters, the film will make you miss them even more but you'll be happy to have closure. The film is best preceded by a marathon of the episodes of the last season. The most drastic difference is the length, which is strange for viewers used to 30-minute episodes, but you can think of it as four episodes rolled into one! For those of us who caught the censored version of the series rerunning on TBS, the film will be a shock as it shows a lot of sex edited out for normal cable. You will love Fergie's remix of the theme song, called "Labels or Love," though I was disappointed they did not play the original throughout the entire movie.
The film, directed by Michael Patrick King, offers closure for each of the 40-something women: Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. Their usual personalities shine through; Carrie's ever-complicated relationship with Mr. Big has finally become serious. First the couple moves into a luxurious New York apartment, and soon after, Carrie persuades Big to get married. She gets "Carried away" with the wedding plans, complete with a designer gown, and it all leads to a let-down on her wedding day. Meanwhile, Miranda must deal with an unbelievable stress on her marriage and Samantha tries to find dying excitement in her relationship with Smith. Charlotte has finally adopted the child she had been dreaming of. One of the funniest scenes in the film reveals a most un-Charlottelike moment. It will have you laughing so hard you cry.
A new addition to the cast is Jennifer Hudson, American Idol finalist and star of Dream Girls, who plays Carrie's personal assistant, who has come to New York to find love, and renews this spirit in Carrie once again. The three best things about the series are also highlighted in the movie: sex, fashion, and New York. You will be sad once again that the series is over, but you won't be disappointed. |
