Listen, with the Meddling Kids and their recently released self titled debut, there are two schools of thought. One being that you are a normal everyday music fan who likes good music with certain touches, or two, you are an evil old man dressed up like a ghost pirate trying to scare people away from your property so you can claim buried treasure for yourself. My guess is that if you are of the latter variety you are not going to like the Meddling Kids since they are here to foil your plan. Oh wait, that’s Scooby Doo – I’m talking about a very talented four piece rock band from Rochester, NY. Sorry for the confusion.

The Meddling Kids are good, and so is their self titled debut record. It is plain and simple, ten tracks of poppy rock that really hits a home run on the whole. But since it is so under the radar in many cases, its not like a high fly ball that sails over the fence in center, its more like a crafty and elusive inside the park homer – you know, a home run you don’t see very often.

They let it all hang out with this record and really give the listener the best of what they can offer – which is some smooth sounding vocals that can carry a song and weave a nice story, mixed in with some strong guitar work and drumming that doesn’t falter. The Meddling Kids have a good grasp of today’s rock stylings, but do a nice job blending in rock nuances from both the 70’s and the 80’s. So pretty much what you get is one song sounding like something you would normally hear on the radio today (It’s Over, Guilloteenager), and then a different song in which you’d normally hear coming out of the 80’s (That Something). Speaking of, That Something is the best track on the record and a solid showcase of what the Kids are able to do musically.

I would have liked to have heard a more clearly defined ballad on this album, but maybe that’s just me. The record is a through and through success, so ballad or not, it doesn’t matter. The Meddling Kids make up for it by creating ten tracks of sheer rock force that should be friendly to all those who happen to listen.
