T. Boone Pickens, crazy old kook or crazy like a fox?

T. Boone PickensI have to admit that I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the new T-Boone Pickins ad stressing the need for the country to adapt alternative energy production methods and to get one-third of our energy needs from alternative sources within the next ten years.

I guess the source of my shock was the fact that this alternative energy initiative comes from T-Boone, not only a big time oil man but also the main financier of the now famous Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that almost single handedly derailed John Kerry’s presidential run in 2004.

On the surface, I would be very wary of a vigorous Bush supporter who has so much to gain from increased oil costs, suddenly coming out against our dependence on oil, but T-Boone is saying all the right things.

He isn’t, like the enviro-heroes on the left, trying to sell us a bill of goods on Global Warming. He is focused on the real problem with oil, the fact that it is all coming from nations, who in reality, don’t like the United States very much, and additionally that our dependence on oil is making our nation’s enemies rich, while simultaneously draining the pockets of the American people.

He correctly assesses that over the next ten years we will see the largest transfer of money in history and unfortunately, the transfer is from the United States into the coffers of criminals, thieves and murderers.

So how solid is the Picken’s Plan? As an eternal skeptic I’m surprisingly happy to report that the Picken’s Plan is actually pretty solid. Its goals are realistic and obtainable.

If the plan does have a weak spot it has to do with individual costs. Unfortunately the Picken’s Plan does nothing to reduce energy cost for individuals and families. Yes more money would stay here in the United States, but I fear that the money will still go to mega-corporations who will monopolize the new energy market just as they have monopolized the old.

In truth, the Picken’s Plan isn’t the magic bullet that is going to solve our energy problems, but it is one giant step in the right direction.
