"Singin' in the Rain" Auditions

"Singin' in the Rain" AuditionsAuditions for the Rotary Club of Batavia’s 60th Anniversary Production, “Singin in the Rain”, will be held Wednesday, September 3 and Thursday, September 4, 2008 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. All auditions will take place at Batavia High School, 260 State Street, Batavia, NY. The show is being directed by Maryanne Arena, Director of Fine and Performing Arts at Genesee Community College.

Callbacks are scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2008 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Rehearsals will be conducted Monday through Friday, with some additional Saturday mornings possible during September and October. Performance dates run Thursday, November 6 through Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Batavia High School.

Based on the 1952 Academy Award-nominated film of the same name and adhering closely to the original, the Rotary Club’s production of “Singin in the Rain” is the 1983 musical with book by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, lyrics by Arthur Freed and music by Nacio Herb Brown. The original West End production opened at the London Palladium, where it ran for two years and three months. Still considered by many to be the best musical ever produced, “Singin in the Rain” is set in Hollywood in the waning days of the silent screen era and focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood’s leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.

All roles are open including two main male and two main female characters. Many supporting and non-singing roles exist as well. Strong singer/dancer/actor/gymnasts encouraged to audition. Those auditioning are asked to prepare 16 bars of a song from the show or another show demonstrating range. Persons auditioning for all roles will be assigned readings from the script.
