Republican National Convention Night Two

Republican National Convention Night TwoThe storm has passed and finally the Republican National Convention is in full swing. As you probably know night one of the Convention got mostly canceled due to Gustaph, but night two rolled on like a freight train, highlighted by the night’s featured speaker Joe Lieberman.

In the strangest sort of political twist, night two of the Republican National Convention welcomed long time Democrat Joe Lieberman to the stage to address Republicans and to make his endorsement of John McCain for President.

Here’s my first problem with Lieberman as the featured speaker. First and foremost, why does it take a Democrat to validate what we believe? Joe Lieberman didn’t say anything that Republicans don’t already believe yet, now because Joe has said it, it becomes more factual? Why do we need the approval of a Democrat to convince us that we are on the right course?

Secondly, eight years ago, Lieberman was the Vice Presidential candidate of his party. How is it possible that he moved so far to the right in such a short time? The answer is he hasn’t moved right. In fact, when it comes to social issues, Lieberman is just as left as he ever was. So before you embrace him, remember that if he gets a position in the McCain administration, he will bring with him all sorts of left leaning policies and objectives.

Finally, Lieberman is a man without a party. When it comes down to it, why wouldn’t he address the Republican National Convention? He no longer has a home in the Democratic Party, so for Joe, it’s either become a Republican or get ready to enjoy an early retirement.

There’s an old saying, be careful of what you wish for you just might get it. When it comes to Lieberman, this old expression is truer than ever. Before we fully embrace this man we need to ask some tough questions like, what does he bring to the table besides a pro-war ideology? Is that really what the party needs or does it further isolate us from average Americans who feel the War in Iraq is and was a mistake?

Joe Lieberman is not the image that will rally Republicans to support John McCain, nor is he the independent figure that will bring in Independent and Democratic voters, so why exactly is he being held up so high by our Republican leaders.

When you shake it all down, Joe Lieberman can’t do anything for the Republican ticket besides giving the faithful a few feel good moments. If we’re going to win this election, we’re going to have to do better.
