Buffalo 2-0 for First Time Since 2003 By Brian Campbell |
| |
All of a sudden people are including the Bills in those AFC playoff talks. It has been a long time since the Bills have looked this good in their first two games, and five years since they won them both. Their 20-16 win over the now 0-2 Jacksonville Jaguars was a surprise to some, but not to Bills fans.
Trent Edwards did what he does best, manage the game and find a way to win. He was nearly perfect as he completed 20-25 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown. He was as effective as can be on third down and more importantly he didn’t make mistakes in the red zone. He led smart drives, including the game winner. Edwards tosses a brilliant 37 yard pass to Lee Evans to set to the game winning touchdown, a fade route to corner of the end zone to rookie James Hardy. Edwards made a pass no one else on the field could catch; it was either going to be a touchdown or incomplete. He looked poised and calm in the pocket, something this team needs under center.
The running back tandem of Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson moved the ball effectively all game long against a good defense. Lynch took 19 carries for 53 yards and the games first touchdown on an 11-yard scamper. Jackson was a favorite target of Edwards’ coming out the backfield as he led all receivers with seven catches for 83 yards. They were good together last season and looks like they might be more of the same this season.
Lee Evans came alive with four catches for 77 yards and rookie James Hardy made his first two catches of his NFL career. He had two catches for 12 yards, including the game winning score. Hardy, at 6’6” was the only one who could catch that ball, and he showed just why the Bills drafted him.
The Bills defense was stout. They held the usually explosive Jags running game to a mere 66 yards, but did give up a touchdown. They only gave up 243 yards of total offense and picked off David Garrard at the end of the first half.
The Bills (2-0) come back home next week to take on the Oakland Raiders (1-1).
