Report: Cervical Cancer Vaccine May Protect Men
(Washington, DC) -- Men could benefit from a vaccine designed for women. Merck and Co has reported the Gardisil cervical cancer vaccine is 90-percent effective in preventing warts in men caused by four strains of the virus it targets. The target virus, HPV, is the most common sexually-transmitted disease in the world. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows HPV has infected 20 million Americans. It's the main cause of cervical cancer, which causes almost four-thousand deaths a year in the U.S. Merck says will submit a U.S. application by the end of the year to use Gardasil in males ages nine to 26. The results of the study were presented at the European Research Organization on Genital Infection and Neoplasia International Multidisciplinary Conference.<
