Researchers Say Family History Is Vital In Breast Cancer Risk
(Washington, DC) -- A family history of breast cancer is an important risk indicator for women who test negative for a pair of genetic mutations linked to the disease. Canadian researchers said they were surprised at the findings that those women are four times more likely to develop breast cancer than average women. One researcher suggests the women at a higher risk should consider preventive measures such as MRI breast exams and the drug tamoxifen. MRI exams are a more sensitive screening test than traditional mammograms.
The results of the University of Toronto study were presented at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. The American Cancer Society says breast cancer kills around 465-thousand women a year around the world. |
