Decemberists' Leader Conceptualizing
Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy has a musical vision and it's all coming together on record. He tells RollingStone.com he might as well get used to people slapping the "concept record" tag on the band's forthcoming work. The group is currently mixing "Hazards Of Love," and Meloy says the disc is a story told in broad strokes. The subject matter includes folk song archetypes, a woman ravaged by a shape-shifting lover, a forest queen, and a villainous rake. Meloy says the initial idea was to create a musical with director Michael Mayer, but he soon realized that the story he was telling would not lend itself to a stage production. The classic rock-leaning disc is bolstered by guest appearances from Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden. The vocalist adds that Decemberists are currently planning to play the album in its entirety when they tour next spring. |
