FDA To Check Chinese Food Exports
(Beijing) -- The Food and Drug Administration has opened an office in Beijing to help ensure the quality of food, drug and feed imports from China. Eight FDA workers will set up a process designed to pre-certify and inspect every food related item headed to the U.S. which means checking hundreds of thousands of food processors and drug makers. Recent problems with melamine-tainted dairy products from China were so serious the U.S. was forced to issue an import alert. The alert forced importers to certify the food was problem free before it ever entered U.S. markets. A similar alert has been in effect for Chinese seafood since last year. Chinese-made Heparin, a blood thinner, has been blamed for fatalities and adverse reactions forcing a recall by Baxter International earlier this year.
