Downsizing Effort Aims Sights On Albany
(Buffalo, NY) -- The man who spearheaded the downsizing of several Western New York municipal governments now has his sights set on Albany. Kevin Gaughan says he wants to see both the state Senate and Assembly have fewer members. The attorney is first aiming to shrink the state Senate from 62 members down to 50. Gaughan says he wants to start with the Senate because he says it's size is not mandated in the state Constitution like the Assembly. He says laying off 12 state Senators would save 12-million dollars. Gaughan says he then wants to reduce the Assembly from 150 members to 125. He says before the state lays off full-time workers to balance the budget it should eliminate part-time state politicians. Gaughan hopes to have the Senate downsizing issue on the November ballot.<
